The fan coloring trend has taken some very talented turns. This one, a coloring of one of my recent con sketches, and titled “Francine & Katchoo’s Secret Identities”, is from Kika in Brazil. Very nice!

And here’s the first posted Hi-Fi Challenge I mentioned last post. It’s not easy coloring a rough sketch like this. From 1997… this is old!

Okay, you may know my favorite songwriter-performer at the moment is Nellie McKay. Nellie is only 20 years old, attending Columbia U., I think, and performing both big time gigs and local clubs around her Harlem neighborhood. This is my favorite YouTube video, Nellie and friends performing her song “Zombie“.
O, btw, gr8 nuz 4 the comp. gen. The National Essay Writing Contest is now excepting video submissions.
So California legalized same-sex marriage today. Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, who have been denied this right for 55 years, were finally, legally married. Their photo, posted on CNN today, reminded me of another couple I know… or rather what they might look like in about 60 years.

Hi Terry!!
I met your blog thanks to Kika (the one who painted the first drawing in this post)! Your peaces are great, congrats!! Maybe I’ll pick one or another to put some colors in too *_*
* But, please, can you correct just one thing? It’s a brazilian blog, not spanish… lol… and that language is portuguese, in case you’ve never heard! =) if you want to know more, just google “brazil” and you’ll see ^^.
Brazil and spain are kinda faaaar away from each other!… xD
Dear Mr. Moore.
As a HUGE fan and an artist myself, this post of yours made me UNBELIEVABLY happy for my best friend… actually, for my SISTER (yes i adopted her), for her coloring of your Ivy/Harley sketch, so first of all THANKS!
That said, the only comment I would like to make is that she is actually Brazilian, and her blog is written in Portugese.
And no, SHE did NOT care that you got it wrong…
Just us, her friends…
SHE is too busy JUMPING UP AND DOWN ANS SCREAMING HISTERICALLY LIKE A JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE FAN!!! XD
Dear Mr. Moore, first of all, let me tell you I am a big fan of yours and that Strangers in Paradise is one of my favorite comics of all time. The art was so stunningly simple and yet, beautiful, and do not get me started with the characters: if Francine and Katchoo did not exist already they would have to be invented, and no one would do a better job.
With that said, I would like to tell you that I know the artist that made the first coloring (the one with poison ivy). She is a great friend of mine, and a bigger fan of your work. I can say with ease of mind that you mentioning her blog with her work is one of those moments she will cherish for a very very long time.
I know it’s not easy to guess a person’s nationality just by looking at a paragraph of text, so I thought I would give you a hand in this matter: we are from Brazil, and there are many fans of your work around here, even if the volumes translated to portuguese are not so easy to find.
I would like to thank you again in both my and her name, and that she would be more than overwhelmed if any other oportunity such as this arises. (sorry for the monster comment)
Francisco
Terry, I’m a huge fan of yours, and you can’t imagine how wonderful is for me having my coloring published in your blog (and it’s not even finished yet!). Thank you very much!
But I have to say: I’m brazilian, and my blog is written in portuguese ;D
Thanks again.
Oops, sorry. I corrected my error in the post. And I really do think Kika did a great job!
Love the colors! I love seeing how different colored works come out when its based on the same black and white image. I did one once from a sketch I did forever ago it got into the back of an issue (the one with katchoo’s butt with the back tattoo), the computer I did it on has since bit the dust and the original is now lost forever. I think its time to do a new one anyway. ^_^
You should totally do a SiP wedding picture. The entire gang in formal attire with the cake and all. Would be super cool.
Terry, I didnt realize that 2 people already pointed out what I had said in my romance of a comment. I guess I just needed an excuse to write here. And yes, she is jumping up and down, if I know anything about her.
Mental note: never mistakenly blog about a Brazilian being from Spain. Although I have to say that its kinda cool that even her friends got so excited to come here to post about it. I have a hard time giving away concert tickets some times so I’m pretty sure my friends wouldn’t be doing that on my behalf.
I thought the Nellie McKay song was okay, so I checked out some more of her stuff. I don’t think she really does much for me personally, but I did read that she’s 25 years old and apparently she does NOT like Columbia actually. Something about her writing a song protesting the school because they test on animals or something like that. I didn’t feel compelled enough to follow that up or anything, so take that for the second-hand, sloppily researched, blog commenting scuttlebutt that it is.
More to the point I think both the colored pieces look amazing. It really shows how much of an impact color can make. Sure all the forms and lines are there in B&W but the piece has identical pencils/inks and yet looks totally different in color. Another example are the colored Bone books that Steve Hamaker is doing currently; it’s a whole ‘nother world to see those guys in color after years of seeing that beautiful line work of Jeff Smith’s. Maybe one day we’ll see a Julie Martin story in color? Think of the possibilities with all the colors of the desert!
I love that you gave a shout-out to Del and Phyllis. They are true heroes.
Sadly, Del Martin (pictured on the right) passed away on August 27th, 2008.
